Fundraiser Idea: Restaurant Night

Dine & Donate

Kelly Huffman & Larry Carmichael

Kelly and her father, Larry, organized a Red Robin Dine & Donate fundraiser in O’Fallon, Missouri, to bring their community together in support of ALK-positive cancer research.

How did they get started?

Kelly and Larry called several local restaurants about fundraising opportunities. They chose Red Robin because it offered to give back 20% of eligible food sales. They applied online through Red Robin’s website under Community > Fundraisers, and received confirmation and a promotional flyer after the restaurant approved their request.

How did they choose a date?

They chose a Thursday in November to connect their event with Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Kelly described the online scheduling process as streamlined.

How did they spread the word?

They created their own flyers and shared them a few weeks before the event with friends and family, at church, the gym, and work, and through social media.

What did they learn?

Kelly recommends planning early and verifying that the restaurant still has the fundraiser on its calendar about a month before the event, even if no additional follow-up is required.

Kelly and Larry’s advice

“Every dollar raised matters! You don’t have to have 100 friends and family attend to raise money!”

Nikki’s community worked with a local trivia DJ, secured a venue, created promotional materials, and connected with local businesses for raffle prizes. Together, they created an event that brought people together while supporting ALK-positive cancer research.

Community Fundraiser: Fitness Class

Stronger Every Day

Michele Romano

Michele’s PVolve community turned a shared love of movement into support for ALK-positive cancer research. A special donation-based class, local business participation, and support from friends and family helped raise $4,919.49 for ALK Positive.

How did Michele’s community bring the idea to life?

The owners of PVolve Upper Saddle River offered to host a donation-based class during Lung Cancer Awareness Month. The class filled within an hour, local vendors joined in, a corporate donor contributed, and the community created special ALK Positive x PVolve T-shirts. Michele also shared her story at the event and reached out to friends and loved ones for support.

Fundraiser Idea: Monthly Giving

$8 to the Greats

Suzanne Remington

Suzanne Remington started $8 to the Greats with a simple idea: invite people to give $8 each month in support of the researchers working to improve life for people with ALK-positive cancer. Her fundraiser shows how small, recurring gifts can add up through a community.

How did Suzanne bring the idea to life?

Suzanne created a dedicated fundraising page and invited others to join her in making an $8 monthly contribution. She connected the amount to her appreciation for researchers, calling them “the Greats,” and shared why ongoing support for research matters to her.

Keng Hsueh on an airplane
Fundraiser Idea: Professional Skills

Turning Airfare into Hope

Keng Hsueh

Keng Hsueh drew on more than 20 years in the travel industry to create HealthcareFares.com, an airfare platform designed to help travelers save money while directing a portion of advertising revenue toward cancer research, including organizations like ALK Positive.

How did Keng bring the idea to life?

Keng combined his experience in online travel with a desire to support cancer research. He launched HealthcareFares.com with a model that offers flight discounts through promotional codes and directs a portion of advertising revenue to research-related causes, without requiring travelers to make a separate donation.
