$8 to the Greats: Because Great Things Start Small

Suzanne believes in the power of small gifts and strong communities. That’s why she launched 8 to the Greats—a way for anyone to give $8 a month to fund lifesaving ALK research. Because we’re truly stronger together.

I’m Suzanne Remington from Connecticut. When I was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer five years ago, I googled the five-year life expectancy. The prognosis was 3%. I thought, “Okay—why can’t one of those 3% be me?” And it is. To which I say: Go, research!

It’s because of that research that I started a fundraiser called 8 to the Greats—with “the Greats” being our researchers. My idea is simple: if enough people give just $8 a month, we can make a real impact.

I believe deeply in ALK Positive’s mantra: we are stronger together. Especially now, with uncertainty around federal funding, we must come together to keep research moving forward. I truly believe each of us can find $8 a month to help make that happen. Together.

“If I had to get cancer, I thank God it was this one—with these people, and with ALK Positive by my side.”

-Suzanne Remington, Patient Advocate

I not only created the 8 to the Greats fundraiser, but I’m also involved in ALK Positive’s Healing Arts calendar. I lead two groups and participate in several others. I do this to give back to a community that has given so much to me (and to all of us).

The Second Opinion Program, ALKtALKs, and the meaningful connections we share with one another have made us stronger and smarter. Knowledge is a powerful weapon against this cancer. I often say: if I had to get cancer, I thank God it was this one—because I got these people. I’m so grateful to ALKPositive.org.

The greatest force that keeps me going is my baby grandson.

I want to be a part of his life for as long as possible. That said, I’ll quote Dr. Ken Culver, Director of Research and Clinical Affairs at ALK Positive, who once said: “It’s the sense of urgency that keeps us going.” I’ve lost friends to this disease, as many of us have. I want to do my part to prolong all our lives—and to help find a cure.

If not in my lifetime, then maybe in time for those who are newly diagnosed. That is my hope. That is what powers me.

I ask you to consider keeping that hope alive by joining the 8 to the Greats fundraiser. It might just be the best $8 a month you’ll ever spend.

Let’s be stronger together.
